Uplifting home-based childcare
What is Home-Based Childcare (HBCC)?
Home-based childcare is a form of paid or unpaid, non-parental childcare that takes place within the home of either the child or the provider, as opposed to a purpose built or multi-purpose center (i.e., centre-based care).
It represents one of the most popular forms of child care globally and is often the best intervention for low-income families. Children are 3x more likely to be in HBCC rather than centre-based in low and middle income countries. In Kenya, an estimated 2.8 million children use HBCC. Its popularity is driven by its affordability for parents, cultural relevance, and accessibility.
The Problem
Each day across the world, nearly 70% of children are looked after in home-based settings, enabling their parents to undertake paid work and other opportunities. Despite its prevalence, HBCC is an overlooked and unsupported sector; providers are severely underpaid, under-recognized and unsupported. They typically don’t have access to government and community-based services that could make a meaningful difference to children’s nutrition, sanitation, and other nurturing care needs. The urgent need to focus on the benefits of high-quality HBCC cannot be underestimated. This early intervention provides the foundations for improved child development, improved labour participation by women, and the creation of a fairer, more equitable society.

school, in turn reducing their future earnings

Current initiatives to increase women’s income-generating opportunities are hindered by inadequate provision for childcare; affordable and contextually-relevant HBCC will enable more women to enter the workforce and achieve economic independence
Empowering women in the care sector
Women providing HBCC often do so on an unpaid and informal basis, and if they are paid, the income is not a living wage. Improving the quality and availability of effective, economically sustainable HBCC can elevate earning potential and economic empowerment

How are we working to solve the problem?
NurtureFirst is a capacity building funder collaborative that works to build and improve “systems” that support home based childcare (HBCC) providers globally. “Systems” that we work to influence include, but are not limited to, instituting and changing policies, improving local and global practices that support providers, and increasing recognition, funding and resources for them. Our goal is to standardize care and elevate the sector to deliver outcomes that will impact children, women, GDP and wider society.

We firmly believe that childcare is a fundamental human right and should be regarded as a public good that is accessible to all. Our ideology is rooted in the understanding that early childhood development plays a pivotal role in shaping a prosperous and equitable society. We advocate for a world where every child has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their socio-economic background. We are working to mobilize partners, change policies, and empower childcare providers to deliver evidence-based, affordable, and culturally relevant care, ensuring that childcare is no longer a privilege but a fundamental right accessible to every child.
